Maine State Planning Office Land
Use Team (www.maine.gov/spo/landuse)
supports local and regional planning efforts, including recreation
and trail planning. Working closely with Maine's communities
and regional planning councils, the SPO encourages walkable
communities by integrating trails and access into local comprehensive
plans.
Healthier US.gov, www.healthierus.gov,
is a federal government Web site that offers information and
guidelines related to health and fitness.
The Bicycle Coalition of Maine has
developed a Web site that helps people find bicycle trails

Kids Walk to School (www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/kidswalk)
provides resources and information about promoting Walk to
School initiatives. Downloadable resources are available.
The Maine Land Trust Network
(www.mltn.org) is a coordination
service provided by Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Launched in
1995, MLTN helps facilitate communication among local land
trusts, provides technical conservation information, disseminates
news, and offers a forum for addressing conservation issues.
The Southern Maine Volkssport
Association (SMVA) (http://smva.8m.com/)
meets monthly in Westbrook to promote non-competitive walking
and walking events throughout the state. Walks are designed
to include such varied points of interest as historic sites,
scenic vistas, downtown areas, woodland trails and parks.
Usually 10 kilometers in length on well marked trails or
explicit written directions the walks are meant to be taken
at your own pace. Each event is free but those wishing to
pay a $3.00 registration fee may participate in an international
organization's achievement award program.
Commute Another Way Week is Maine’s annual statewide
transportation event that promotes healthy, economical and eco-friendly alternatives to driving to work alone, including

Maine Physical Activity and Nutrition Program
(http://www.healthymainepartnerships.org/panp) The Maine Physical Activity and Nutrition Program (PANP) coordinates state-wide efforts to support Maine people in achieving recommended levels of physical activity and proper nutrition to prevent overweight and obesity and chronic diseases.
Maine Safe Routes to School Program
(http://www.maine.gov/mdot/opt/srts.php) Safe Routes to School is a federal, state, and local effort to enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; and to make walking and bicycling to school safe and more appealing. A major goal of the program is to increase bicycle, pedestrian, and traffic safety.
